South Miami Hospital

OHL-Arellano has been performing preconstruction and construction management services for South Miami Hospital since 1986. Renovation and new construction projects include: new endoscopy and wellness centers, PET scan unit, tower building, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, radiology/oncology, cardiology, Level III neonatal intensive care unit, labor and delivery, new heart center, East Tower renovation, nursery, clinical laboratories, and a rehabilitation unit.

The South Miami Clinical Expansion houses a new emergency department and a 15-room operating suite. Associated renovations created a new support space for recovery and central sterile processing. The project’s considerable structural constraints required the use of building information modeling. All work was accomplished without disruption to the occupied campus’ operations, including its stringent infection control program. The expansion’s success exemplifies OHL-Arellano’s integrated preconstruction and construction process.

Benefits to the community

South Miami Hospital was constructed in 1960 as a 100-bed facility. Now, a 452-bed hospital, it has expanded to meet the area’s population growth and to offer new services and programs. South Miami Hospital houses such innovative programs as the Center for Robotic Surgery, the Center for Women & Infants, the South Miami Heart Center and a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In addition, this hospital opened a new Emergency Center and Surgical Suites (Clinical Expansion) in January 2013 and is expanding and renovating its imaging area to provide the very best patient care to the community.

In recent years, the hospital has been recognized by several awards and recognitions including the Magnet Hospital of Nursing Excellence in 2004 and 2008, and the Governor’s Sterling Award in 2010.

South Miami Hospital Clinical Expansion achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. LEED certification is the standard for sustainable initiatives in design, construction and high-performance operation of buildings. Moreover, in 2012 the project received the Sunshine State Safety Recognition Award for its efforts in implementing and maintaining an effective injury and illness prevention program/process.
